Taylor Hancock

Assistant Professor, Biology

Doane University

Taylor Hancock is an assistant professor of biology at Doane University. Taylor received a M.S. in environmental science from Florida Gulf Coast University and a Ph.D. in Geography & Environmental Science & Policy from the University of South Florida. Past work ranges from Critically Endangered sawfish feeding ecology to cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom transcriptomics. This variety of past experiences has been scaffolded into a research program focusing on the interactions of organisms, both macro and micro, with their environment.

Current BROADN-related work involves examining emissions of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms and characterizing nematode wind-dispersal. The lab has a specific interest to incorporate digital image analysis for automation and standardization of analyses as well as the development of new ways to analyze otherwise qualitative visual information. Projects are student focused, offering the opportunity to not only learn lab and field techniques, but more importantly, critical thinking and troubleshooting abilities that crystalize when a good plan meets the dynamic nature of an ecosystem.
